I've compiled a list of
DO's and
DON'Ts based on my experience with Craigslist as both a buyer and a seller. This mainly pertains to furniture, but you can apply it to anything I suppose...
Listen up.
As a BUYER:
- Don't ever try to bargain or get a cheaper price before having the item and the seller in front of you! At that point, you have zero leverage and its way easier for the seller to turn down your offer. Wait until you are in there, inspecting the item before you negotiate.
- Don't contact the seller through email. Phone calls and texts show a seller that you are truely interested.
- Don't be a jerky flake. If you change your mind about buying, give the seller the courtesy and let them know you aren't coming.
- Do come prepared with the right change.
- Do offer 10-20% less than asking. For example, if a chair is listed at $50, go ahead an offer $40. Its fair, it's worth a shot, its 20% off, and it won't insult the seller.
- Do be on time when scheduled to meet.
- Do tell someone where you are going, in case the sellers are psycho killers.
As a SELLER:
- Do take good pictures. Nothing is more annoying for a potential buyer than a blurry or dark photo. Make what you're selling seem as appealing as possible. And take more than one pic from a few different angles.
- Do give measurements. ie, width, depth, height.
- Do leave a phone # for buyers to contact you.
- Don't list something for sale then go out of town all weekend. hashtag annoying.
- Do use keywords that relate to your item on your posting. This will generate a broader reach.
- Do disclose any imperfections and be honest with the condition of the piece.
- Do expect people to haggle and negotiate with you. Don't be afraid to pad your asking price a bit. This gives you wiggle room for negotiation. The buyer will feel like they got a good deal and you still got $ you wanted all along!
- Don't EVER take money orders or checks! There are terrible people out there waiting to take advantage of you. CASH ONLY.
